Pharmaceutical Picking App

August 2001 to January 2002.
Warehouse Management RF SAPconsole mobile implementation for picking deliveries and Handling Units for a pharmaceutical manufacturer, New Jersey.

Modules: WM, SD, MM, IM.
Tools: ABAP tools, Screen Painter, GUI designeer, SAPconsole, trace, debug, monitoring tools, RFC,
BDC, Call Transaction, Data Dictionary. ALE.

Other: Ascendant documentation toolset, Vertex middleware.

Designed, built and implemented customized Warehouse Management screens to automate picking of Deliveries and Handling Units, using hand-held and vehicle-mounted Radio Frequency terminals. Multiple distribution centers and a variety of work practices were supported. SAPconsole, the SAP dialog tools and middleware from Vertex were used.

Due to very specific batch management and handling unit requirements, SAP internal functions were re-used at a low level, including complex adaptation of the new 4.6 Handling Unit functionality.

The technical design required use of the SAP introspection tools, including trace and debug.

Custom software was also written for barcode analysis, for automatic creation of Transfer Orders triggered by SAP delivery screens, and additional standard (non-RF) screens for maintenance and support purposes in the warehouse office.

The project was delivered on-time with high levels of technical performance and customer satisfaction, and is considered by the customer to be an advanced and sophisticated use of the WM technology.

The system was prototyped with extensive power user participation and an accelerated project schedule, and was documented to strict FDA requirements.

Knowledge transfer and initial production support were included. Miscellaneous additional work included work on user exits, batch determination and backorder analysis.
